I had an installation where that happened to me. I started out with -- what? Stormix or Progeny -- and did a dist-upgrade to woody/testing. It removed the existing gdm (which had the nice picture on the left) and left me with that plain looking thing (which, admit it, is lots better than xdm!). It did the D, and A, business, until it gave me a proper login. Problem is, I didn't keep this setup long enough to find out if it did the D & A all the time, because "sawfish" wouldn't install. Rather, I was stuck with twm, or something crippled within Gnome. So your experience, although bad, is not hallucinations. Jerome.
