Inspect your /etc/apt/sources.list file and see if you have pointers
there for the Progeny "update" section included and activated (not
remarked out). The lines that work here for me are:
deb http://archive.progeny.com/progeny updates/newton/
deb-src http://archive.progeny.com/progeny updates/newton/
The Gnome 1.4 debs are in this section.
