Gimp knows how many dots there are on your screen, but doesn't know how
much room they take up in the real world. Measuring the screen and typing
in the values lets it work out an accurate DPI value. Unless you're doing
work that depends on the physical size of the output, it's probably not
worth worrying about too much.
