compiling kernels

I installed Progeny a couple days ago, then tried to compile a new 2.4.x 
kernel into a deb package, and got error messages from depmod "unmet 
dependencies"  for all my modules I think.

Does anyone have any ideas of what package, if any, I'm missing to make a 
successful kernel compile?
