Hey peter,

My guess is that the .htm extension may be causing a non-browser application to 
try and open these files. 

I'll give you a solution that works for me on Lion OSX. 

(0) Do a spotlight search on .htm, select one of those files (as you will see 
in step 3 it doesn't really matter which one you choose) 
(1) Cmd-I to get the information pane, 
(2) Choose the application from the drop down combo box that you would like to 
open the file 
(3) Click the  button below to change all files like this to open with the 
browser you have chosen. 

This should work unless there is a reason that you need gedit to open these 
files.
