That inability is a huge hole in the language. Most other languages
(such as k) deal with this more or less adequately.

One could illustrate the point with a dictionary where the adding of
the letter z would make the result trillions of times bigger than its
actual contents would suggest: it must have the same number of pages,
the same number of words, the same number of letters, the same number
of definitions, etc etc. Each causing an expansion.

The whole (real) world is filled with ragged arrays. Only an idealized
play world is orthotopic. A useful language has to contend with
reality.
