Hi Mike,
I can only comment on the writexlsheets/writeshtdat. You are correct that
writexlsheets writes a whole file. The tables/tara addon only allows you to
write a new .xls file. You can't open a file, edit/change it and then save
it again.
writeshtdat won't help you with what you are trying to do. It is just
abstracts out the code for writing to a new sheet.
Hopefully Bill will have better news with regards to wdoowrite.
