You might find useful two papers I co-authored with Howard Peele:

  APL thinking - examples, APL87
  APL problem-solving - a tutorial, APL89

In each we go through our thinking process as we worked towards solutions to 
the problems at issue.

At least the first was published in APL Quote Quad; I think the third was in a 
conference addendum for APL Quote Quad as well. Due to probably copyright 
restrictions, I cannot post these.
