A couple troubleshooting questions come to mind: Is it consistently failing after 10K requests?
Once it fails, is 2!:0 effectively broke for the j process and it must be restarted? Or does 2!:0 work for other commands? I'm somewhat baffled by what 2!:0 is actually doing. It seems to be redirecting the system command to a temporary file and reading from the file. I can't figure out by looking at it how the tmpnam gets added to the system command. I'm used to seeing popen https://github.com/openj/core/blob/18fd23bbdc2f50770eb3047e978cd5e4e3b47039/xh.c#L39 I'm also suspect of the magic number 5 in that code.
