Do you mean installing a new version of J? I really don't think this is necessary. Installing or uninstalling J does not touch anything related to R. Most likely something went wrong with your R installation, and reinstalling it fixed the problem. BTW, the GUI debugger is not yet available in J8, though the underlying debug foreigns work fine.
