That is a bit tricky to explain. At one level of abstraction: we are both using gmail, and I sent a copy of that message both to you and not to the list.
Gmail [currently] forces a proportional-spaced font on users (though you can override this at the browser level - details depend on which browser you are using and change over the years). In gmail, I composed in "plain text" mode and then set the font for the J content to "Courier New". To see a lower level of abstraction, you can use the "Show Original" menu option (currently, in gmail, the small triangle to the right of the "Reply" button opens a dropdown menu with this option). There, if we are talking about the same message), you probably be able to find something like: (except with more stuff after the MIME-Version line and before that Received line). MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.216.35.211 with HTTP; Mon, 3 Nov 2014 19:26:10 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2014 22:26:10 -0500 Delivered-To: rauldmil...@gmail.com Message-ID: <CAD2jOU9-Ub5i9MhHdXNJcNmXrQ=j30jouanhjj+hmbgbh0k...@mail.gmail.com> Subject: [OFFLIST] Re: [Jprogramming] This surprised me. From: Raul Miller <rauldmil...@gmail.com> To: Devon McCormick <devon...@gmail.com> Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=047d7b603e304551c905070006d4 The multipart/alternative bit means that multiple copies of the message body got sent in the same message. In this case you should be able to find both a plain text copy and an html copy. Also the string or characters '047d7b603e304551c905070006d4' will appear between the boundaries of these copies I expect that you were viewing the html copy in gmail, and that if I had sent this message to the list that the plaintext copy would have been the only copy to get through. Quite often, of course, the "show original" approach is completely unreadable (for example when I look at the original of the message you sent me, as I received it from the list, I see a header that says Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 and the body is unreadable). Here's an except (bottom of the message headers, top of the message body), showing what I got from this mailing list: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Errors-To: programming-boun...@forums.jsoftware.com Sender: programming-boun...@forums.jsoftware.com UmF1bCAtCgppbiB5b3VyIG1lc3NhZ2Ugb2YgMTA6MjYgeWVzdGVyZGF5LCBob3cgZGlkIHlvdSBh Y2NvbXBsaXNoIHRoZSBkaXNwbGF5IHRoYXQKbG9va2VkIGNvcnJlY3QgKHRoZSBsYXR0ZXIgb25l KT8KClRoYW5rcywKCkRldm9uCgpPbiBUdWUsIE5vdiA0LCAyMDE0IGF0IDM6NDYgQU0sIGJpbGwg bGFtIDxiYmlsbC5sYW1AZ21haWwuY29tPiB3cm90ZToKCj4gQ2VydGFpbmx5IHlvdSBhcmUgY29y cmVjdC4gTXkgdXNlIG9mIHRoZSB0ZXJtIGFzY2lpIHdhcyB3aXRoIHJlbGF0aXZlIHRvCj4gaHRt bC4KPgo+ICogaHR0cDovL2VuLndpa2lwZWRpYS5vcmcvd2lraS9BU0NJSV9SaWJib25fQ2FtcGFp Z24KPgo+INCS0YIsIDA0INC90L7RjyAyMDE0LCBSYXVsIE1pbGxlciDQvdCw0L/QuNGB0LDQuyjQ sCk6Cj4gPiBJIGd1ZXNzIG15IHBvaW50IHdvdWxkIGJlIGJldHRlciBleHByZXNzZWQgYnkgcG9p For that case, there's a "Message text garbled?" option on that drop-down menu that shows the decoded message as plaintext in a fixed-width font and a note at the top for people reading messages which are still unreadable. (But of course you have to come back to the proportional spaced version in the gmail window to reply - you cannot interact with that plaintext version.) I hope this helps. -- Raul On Tue, Nov 4, 2014 at 8:12 AM, Devon McCormick <devon...@gmail.com> wrote: > Raul - > > in your message of 10:26 yesterday, how did you accomplish the display that > looked correct (the latter one)? > > Thanks, > > Devon > > On Tue, Nov 4, 2014 at 3:46 AM, bill lam <bbill....@gmail.com> wrote: > >> Certainly you are correct.
