I've got something working here if anybody needs hierarchical clustering:

I'll be updating and modifying this in the next few months as needed for
a personal project, adding things like D3 output for the dendrograms,
but it's useful now. Thanks to Bill Lam for the comments on pointer of
pointers that made this possible.
