You're right with your assumption that something is wrong here as
on my machine I do not see 'libreadline' in the list of jconsoles' dependencies.
Therefore the settings given in 'inputrc' will not be picked up.

On my Debian 'wheezy' I have used [ctrl_d] for character delete as a workaround with success in xterm ...

Martin:
Read up a little on the history of TTY recently which reminded me of the days when I had a teletype in my home office :)
That's when I stumbled over some of those control codes.
