The responses all helped! ANSYS starts from a launcher and is not on the path. Adding that helped, as did cderr. Since hugging is neither appropriate nor reasonably possible, I offer instead my j version of the unix strings program used to find the names of functions in the library as well as the names of the dlls required by the ANSYS binlib library.

FSM=:F;S;<M

NB. (,LF,.~>FSM;:1!:1<BINLIB)1!:2<'d:/binlib.strings' NB. noun BINLIB is path to binary file of interest
