Now that in-place assignment is available for most occurrences of m}, is doesn't hurt performance to use modifiers to make things easier to read:

   replace =: 1 : '[`(u"_)`]}'

   a =: 'aeiouwy'

   a =: 'fg' (3 1 replace) a   NB. Parentheses optional

   a

agifuwy

In the next release noun ARs will be supported in gerund}, and then replace can be written as

   replace =: 1 : '[`(5!:1<''u'')`]}'
