The first code sample should be      <a , b>        as you suggest.
The second has no result (the 7 is an error).

The corrected transcript should appear as;

The verb ([) (left), also of infinite rank, provides pseudo-punctuation in the 
form of a statement separator

  a=.2 [ b=.3
  a,b
2 3

which works because the above line is essentially

  a=.2[3

with the assignment to b taking place ‘in passing’.
