When this fails, what is the value in z that gives the error?
BTW, Bill, that error with gcc that you reported a few weeks back turned
out to be a program error that showed up only on that compiler. If you
switch back to gcc now it should be gone.

Which specific value is wrong changes from failure to failure, but
it's always this line, and it appears to happen about every 50 to 100
iterations. This happens on debian linux 32 and 64nonavx, with the
latest beta release and when compiled from the latest version on github.
