Cancelling T and solving for k gives 
k = (kmax/2) + ((kmax/2)^2 - kmax)^0.5 

If kmax is a constant, then k is also.  

Probably you don't mean that.  Probably the T on the left side of the 
equation you state is different from the T on the right.    I'm 
tempted to use different symbols for different quantities.  Eg.

Temperature = T = kU*(1-k/kmax)

At present I don't have an interpretation for U in the annealing 
analogy.  Hopefully there is one.
