I decline to comment on what the Dictionary means, since NuVoc is
definitive. I agree with your expected results (the JE produces shape 0
10 for the first one).
We disagree about what _ and __ would mean; perhaps they should mean
(length of axis)+1, but not (length of axis) IMO.

In both cases, we are looking for a sub array starting at index 3, the
difference is the length of that sub array. But, also, in both cases,
there are not enough elements in the array for a non-empty result.
So... I do not disagree that these results should be different...
It took me a bit before I realized that 0 was an integer multiple of
3. I'm a bit slow today.
But _ and __ would be placeholders here for 10 and _10. There's no
need to generalize any further.
