Thanks for the explanation & the rationale behind the change. I have
been running Ubuntu 16.04 for longer than I realized. Installing a new
Ubuntu always comes with some broken features which take time to fix.
But I did install Ubuntu 20.04 a few days ago. First, all the icons on
the desktop were squished out of shape. Then the computer sound went
completely silent. But I've now fixed those issues and am glad I'm good
until the next LTS. Installing j903 now has no issues (although I did
have to explicitly grant the desktop "J" icons permission to launch
applications). I do want to use j903 since I've started to like the {{
... }} syntax in scripts.

Change in linux JE binaries:
Before J903-beta-i, Jsoftware built linux JE on Mint 18.
Now we build linux JE on Mint 20.1.
Unfortunately these new binaries will not run on older linux systems as
they require libm.so.6: version GLIBC_2.29.
If you install J903-beta-i or later and J fails to start you can check in
terminal for this problem with:
user@host: ldd j903/bin/libj.so
... libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.29' not found ...
This is caused by moving from Mint 18 to Mint 20.1. We had to make this
move at some point and now seemed to make more sense than delaying.
Mint 18 Sarah (Ubuntu 16.04) was released in September 2016 and support for
it ended in April 2021.
Mint 20.1 Ulyssa (Ubuntu 20.04) was the stable release in January 2021 and
has LTS (long term support) until 2025.
We don't know how many users will be inconvenienced by this or how much
trouble it will cause. Most users are probably already on more recent linux
distributions and won't have a problem.
For some the easiest fix is to upgrade to a newer linux version.
Or checkout J source from the repo and build JE for your system.
A workaround with LD_PRELOAD was presented in the beta forum and is a
reasonable solution in some cases. However, it is recommended against in
official linux news as it mixes things that have not been officially tested.
Inform us in the beta forum if you are completely stuck by this change.
