being a beginner myself, I fully understand the troubles of learning
J.. However, my two main learning resources have been:

1. The book "Learning J" which you already mentioned: http://www.learningj.com/
2. Henry Rich's book "J for C programmers":
https://www.jsoftware.com/help/jforc/contents.htm

While the first book gives a more example driven approach to the
material, the latter one gives a more in-depth presentation of the
basic concepts. At least that is how I felt about the books.
