Yes swap swaps the top two elements.
And is something my application needs to support.
Generally my impression of "special coding" is that it is quite
"special" and equivalent forms are not supported unless explicitly
mentioned. But if negative drop and perhaps curtail to a power, were
also supported, that would be helpful.

actually i would want something more like

Assuming we continue to have special codding only at one end of the
list. The idea being to roll the context back and forth in the stack,
exposing the middle to regular stack operations.
