Leigh - I agree with Bill, so, I've posted the code I use for reading and writing Excel spreadsheets on the J Wiki at http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/OLEExcel.
I don't use Tara myself as it's closed. Perhaps, if you try my code, you can give us an idea of how they compare.
