function (odd or even) is the same as the parity 
of x as a number.

I guess "function code" is as good a description
as any.  Usually there is no deep meaning behind
the particular value of a function code.
Sometimes there is a small mnemonic value:

x o. y  is an odd or even function, the same as
the parity of x .

(-x) p: y is the inverse of x p: y, if there is
an inverse.  Likewise x s: y .  x u: y should have
been made to follow this pattern (but does not).
