Dan: Here's my experience. Running j.exe: no good. Running jconsole from a DOS box: no good. Running jconsole from a Cygwin bash shell: everything works as you would expect. I think that in this case the spawned process inherits the environment settings from the initial login. Running a login shell on the command line should do it.
