I think I now understand the problem. The wd 'winexec' call is finishing before the R call completes and writes out the result file. This would explain the _1 result, which must be the result of the fread on a non-existent file. Something changed since I wrote this, I think on R 2.2. Anyway, the solution on Windows will be to use the task script, which will enforce the wait.
