I guess that you had used tallies=. somewhere inside your script. In ijx session both =. and =: are the same, always assigns to global name.

In your debugger, the lower window shows the values or definitions of names in the current sentence. Or in the ijx session, you may type part of the expression progressively until you can locate the exact reason why it is broken.

Thank you for the practical advice.  I've never used
the debugger before.  I've called it up for this, and
have been looking at its documentation and lab.  So
far, however, it seems to tell me no more than what I
know from the error message provided in the console.

I remain very interested in assistance on this (from
anybody who can make an educated guess).  Some
difference must exist between executing this code and
defining a verb with the very same code.  What might I
look for to identify it?
