For many values of the arguments it is preferable to calculate lngamma than 
gamma and then its log.  The gamma function fails to return a value when 
lngamma reaches quite modest values.   I would suggest you look at Numerical 
Recipes for some comments, and a method you could implement in J, but you 
would need to go much deeper into the numerical analysis literature to study 
the issues.
