The major inferential technique is analysis of variance, where you are comparing ratios of variances on the slices. Ok, I guess I can see this being a major issue for multivariate contexts. I've not thought through those issues very much (and have at best academic understanding of f distributions -- despite the fact that they probably have some immediate practical relevance to some of my work).
