Maybe better and cleaner alternative would be to implement bit type. In this
case shifts would become |.
I understand that it is difficult to tell when byte per boolean is better then
bit per boolean, but implementation may make some reasonable choices here. For
example, large boolean arrays are represented as bits, small as bytes.
