I should have written:

the shape of f"0 {.,y .
That is, the size of the empty display depends upon the shape of the result,
not merely its rank, and the scalar that f is
tested upon isn't necessarily 0 , it is a scalar of the same type as y
(i.e. a scalar fill of y ).
