That's not clear.  There are significant differences between the valences of  
map_jmf_  .  Primarily, the sentence  map_jmf_ y  stores the noun's header in 
the file, whereas   x map_jmf_ y  stores the noun's header in memory.  There 
are also significant differences between mapping boxed and unboxed arrays.

I am not convinced it is possible to map a headerless boxed array (i.e. whether 
  (32;...) map_jmf_ ...  can work) .  If I get time, I'll play around a bit and 
report my results.

PS:  The phrase

>   12.34(0"0)} i.3 4


does what you intend, but the reasons you think (I suspect, anyway).  For 
example:

    12.34 0:} i.3 4

would have identical results (and would be faster in the general case).
