In case you're still having trouble seeing, what Joey wrote was "comma dot zz", that is "ravel items".
To answer your more general question about why "aa 1" gives an error, a simple answer is that you can't put two nouns next to each other without an intervening verb. E.g. 'a b'=. 1 22 a b |syntax error | a b a,b 1 2 What is perhaps confusing in this context is that an expression like 1 2 is _not_ two nouns but a single noun.
