A long shot:  if x is NaN, it is possible for x to be
changed after executing for the following C code:

   double t,x;
   t=x;
   x=t;

In any case, it may be useful to identity the
byte/halfword/word/double that got changed and 
see if you can spot a pattern.  If the halfword is 
0xfff8 (or 0xf8ff) then I'll bet that NaN is the culprit.
