Ric's example does a better job, than my first example, of highlighting which 
is the noun and which is the verb definition.  As for my more complicated 
example, though, I find that I actually don't quite follow what is going on.

(It's arguably not good technique to nest explicit definitions in the manner 
shown below, but this is an exploration of syntactic parsing.)

What I'm not yet comprehending is why the nested verb, in each example above, 
has an effect while the later code does not.  I'm also not able to envision how 
the nested verb gets its argument.
