Recently I have experienced the following problems while working with jmf
files.

If I set the read-only flag while mapping to a jmf file with boxed data in
it, I can see
the variable, can do $ on it, but cannot access its cells, e.g. using { or
{., without
causing J to close. If I do not set the read-only flag, I can see and use
the data.

Often I find that the variable mapped to a jmf file has been corrupted.
Instead
of seeing, for example, a boxed matrix of size 139 4 with various string
and
numeric items, I see a string specifying the contents of my array as
'139 4$ ...'. If the file is small enough I can recover the contents
using "., but
usually the file is too large and the corrupted contents are incomplete,
only
a few hundred bytes long, so I get an open quote error.

I am sure I have not "stomped on" my jmf files by doing assignments to
variables mapped to them, even though I would prefer to set the read-only
flag to make sure this doesn't happen.

The files themselves show the same modification date as before, so I do
not think their contents have changed.

This is seriously hindering my work!
