I am not convinced of this, because:

If there are some useful mechanisms involving polynomials
and their inverses, then picking a form of polynomial inverse
which caters to those mechanisms would be less arbitrary
than picking a form of polynomial inverse which does not
have any useful application.

[This would still be arbitrary if polynomials were considered
in a vacuum, but would not be arbitrary in the context of J.]
