An interesting idea, but where does it end? Do we need to immediately see the difference between, for example, i. 2 2 and i. 1 1 1 2 2 which both have the same display value. Is $x too much of a bother for students who need to dissect a value? I sure hope not.

No.  I'd like for students to be able to see immediately whether
any result is an atom or a 1-item list.  It is confusing to them
that they look the same.
I can use linrep to show the difference - a good idea, and
I'll try it - but it would be better if they could just
immediately see the difference in any result.
