I have a few times needed to get at coded data. J is very well suited to figure out the coding. Especially when you do not know the coding but you do know a little bit about what the results should be then you can use binary operations to split data into its elements and use trial and error on the data until you get it right, The phrases have proven to be of great help in such experiments. Without J the data I have saved in such way might have gone unusable otherwise. This used to be a lot more problem when disk was expensive.
