I want the response of the interpreter to the sequence of J sentences in a noun and to have that available during execution of the script.

But that response isn't available until after your script is executed.
Does this mean the script is interpreted and completed before the session manager is interrogated by the smread ? That is what appears to be happening. The execution of the script appears to follow a different protocol from execution of the same set of instructions from the session manager.
There must be a simple way of doing this.
I would explicitly capture the results I wanted to capture.
Exactly. But what is a simple way of doing it? Do we need a function which interacts with the j.dll directly? Is there one somewhere in the distribution which I do not know about? The session manager must be doing this all the time.
