yes it is algorithmic.  When I say look back, I mean "look back in time".
 I think that "look-back" gets used in a few different contexts.  Sorry for
the confusion.

My reading of the J FSM is that it can only refer to the current row.  I
hope I'm wrong... but perhaps sometimes you just have to have a loop.

It's a bit like "3 <\ 'abcdefgh'" without a different verb instead of '<'
and for a higher rank than 1. Perhaps it is achievable this way as well.
