J before version 5 defined this train and many more,
and you could do what you want using its features.

Those trains were removed because there weren't half a dozen users who 
were really familiar with them.

I miss them.  Not that they were faster, or easier to use - they were 
hard to write and hard to read, and the verbs they produced were no 
different from the ones produced by 1 : - but they were so austerely 
elegant.  I never found a problem I couldn't express tacitly.
