The short answer is you can't use  &.  in this case.  The result of the phrase 
of  f&.g  is the output of  g^:_1  .  But in your
case the result is the output of  lsfit  , not  |:^:_1  (aka  |:  ).

Put another way, your verb's pattern is   f g^:_1 (something) g  data  .  
Whereas  &.  expands to   g^:_1 f g data  .
