This would work as long as you leave the ucpboxdraw bit in there. 

I agree that the Unicode characters are much clearer, I'm not sure that it is a 
good idea to force the use of them though. If the user as chosen Ascii symbol 
boxing for their session there is probably a good reason. Why would they want 
Ascii symbols in their session but not in the GUI? 

I think you at least need to leave the option of being able to specify ASCII 
symbol boxing. It is often useful if you want to copy and paste to a forum 
email for example. 

The easiest way to do this is to make it dependent on the session setting and 
let the user choose their desired Tools|Toggle Ascii box drawing setting.
