My limited understanding is that resursive invocation of function is 'the loop equivalent(iteration with state info as the parameter)' for FP(assuming that things are immutable so 'while state < 100000 do state = state - 1' is not allowed). I know that for 95% of the time, I can practice FP style programming without a generic loop as map/fold/filter can cover most cases.
