In Proggy set, there is a few versions that provide bold punctuation
and brackets within the font itself. Scroll down a little bit on the
download page.

Distinguishing | from l is very easy in many programming fonts(for
example, DejaVu Sans Mono).

Since heavily using DejaVu Sans Mono(more than 2 years at least), I
made not a single mistake from confusing characters.
