Again I suspect the pdf files are already written out because 1!:2 will
not popup window when failed, that popup might come from pdf viewer.
Please add lines such as
smoutput (dquote PDFREADER_j_),' ',dquote file
hostcmd (dquote PDFREADER_j_),' ',dquote file
or
smoutput 'winexec *',PDFREADER_j_,' ',dquote file
wd 'winexec *',PDFREADER_j_,' ',dquote file
to trace why it failed.
