I too have a EEEPC.  Before I reinstalled Linux I had the ASUS standard distro, 
which installed J OK.  I had some problems of my own making not correctly using 
the console and windows version.  BUT IT worked so much so that I did a quite 
reasonable hash of a system (in J) to query language structures to help my 
son's research on central Australian language changes.  That was transported 
between eeePC and MacOS/X.

I now have 100% debian distro and J installed OK as well.
