So true. A big part of learning J is the process of discovering and
appreciating shorter, smoother, or otherwise better ways to accomplish
something you just wrote in a longer, rougher, more clumsy manner.

Another thing worth stating in this instance is the possibility of
~:&0
in place of
-...@=&0

As you indicated, shorter forms are gradually relied upon more readily
as fluency grows.
