My personal "true story" of J's name is that Roger was hacking at the first iteration of the interpreter. It came time to save his work; the OS prompts him for a filename. He has to think fast, and hasn't thought about a name for the language. He's a succinct man. And the letter "J" was sitting there, directly under his right index finger.....
